formance of the software.
WHAT IS SAFZIP:
SAFZIP v4.0S is the quick and easy way to make sure that all subdirectories,
volume labels and read-only, hidden or system files get included when using
PKzip and PKunzip AND to insure that the newly unarchived files are SAFE of
viruses.
FUNCTIONS OF SAFZIP:
I don't know how many times I have had to ask the question "Did you use
PKunzip with the -d option?" when somebody complains about some program not
working which had subdirectories. SAFZIP will even allow you to zip your DOS
boot disk. Teledisk is NOT required to zip a DOS disk, PKzip & PKunzip work
just fine when you know the right parameters to use.
SAFZIP v4.0S adds optional virus scanning. This option is enabled with the
SAFZIP environment variable. When SAFZIP is set to " scan ", virus scanning
will automatically be performed with McAfee's SCAN.EXE after unzipping.
INSTALLATION OF SAFZIP:
The process is very simple. Unarchive SAFZIP4S.ZIP to a directory that is in
your systems "PATH". You can use any text editor (such as DOS's Edit or
SemWare's QEdit) to modify your " PATH= " statement if necessary. You also
HAVE to have PKWare's PKZip & PKunzip programs in your path as well.
IF you want to have SAFZIP scan your files for viruses when you UNZIP your
new files, be sure to install McAfee's virus scanner (SCAN) in your path as
well. You will need to add the following statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
"EXACTLY" as listed below:
set safezip=scan
(make SURE the word "scan" is in small letters)
That is basically all there is to it.
HOW TO USE SAFZIP:
ZIP.BAT is the file that is used to call PKzip with all these magic
parameters. UNZIP.BAT, of course, is for the PKunzip side of things.
Please ensure that both COM files are left in the path with PKzip, PKunzip &
Scan so that DOS can find them ALL.
When ZIPing or UNZIPing from/to floppy drives, only the drive letter needs
to be specified, such as "A" rather than "A:". When ZIPing from a floppy it
is assumed that ALL files will be added to the zip, so it is NOT necessary
to specify " A:*.* ". Simply "A" will do. Volume labels are only included
when ZIPing or UNZIPing from a floppy. SAFZIP only recognizes drives A & B
as being floppies. Modified versions of SAFZIP may be obtained from our BBS
listed below.
The parameters used are mostly the same as if you were using PKzip & PKunzip
directly. SAFZIP just adds the parameters that you normally forget to use in
order to practice "safe" ZIPing. Below is a summary of the command formats
where [path] is the optional location of the files to be zipped or location
where the zipfile should be unzipped to. The [path] defaults to the current
directory, BUT if the logged drive is a floppy, the drive letter MUST be
specified in order to save the volume label. The [files....] would be an
optional list of files to be zipped or unzipped.
ZIP zipname[.ZIP] [path] [files...]
UNZIP zipname[.ZIP] [path] [files...]
VERSION 4 IMPROVEMENTS:
Additional support for the new 2.0x versions of PKWare's PKzip & PKunzip.
Created single system version (SAFZIP4S) & networked version (SAFZIP4N).
Both versions were "completely" re-compiled for faster operation.
